What is Marijuana? Marijuana is a common name for the dried buds and leaves of the female indian hemp plant, Cannabis Sativa. It is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. Many use marijuana for its intoxicating effects. It is usually dried; then smoked, cooked into food, or boiled in a beverage. The active chemical ingredient in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is a hallucinogen that produces changes in perception, thought, and feeling. Although, the effects are much milder than those of LSD, MDMA, Mescalin, and psilocybin. THC was first isolated and sythesized in 1965.
